The British and the Americans justified the devastating attacks on the cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen situated vis--vis on the other side of the Rhine with the large chemical plants of the IG Farben (BASF) in which thousands were killed. Unacknowledged, it was the main purpose.

 

This area was attacked quite early in the course of the war, mainly on

17 December 1940,

10 May 1941,

7 December 1942,

17 April 1943,

9/10 August 1943,

5/6 September 1943,

23/24 September 1943,

12 May 1944,

19 October 1944,

16 December 1944

 

Particularly heavy raids were carried out on 9/10 August 1943 with 432 machines and 1,700 tons of bombs. The attack on 5/6 September 1943 was very similar with 546 planes and 1,463 tons of bombs.

 

The attack on 23/24 September 1943 was of similar intensity and targeted especially the industrial plants.

 

Overall, more than 50 percent of housing in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen was destroyed by the bombing.
