Kiel as a major naval port and shipyard was naturally an important strategic goal of the Allied bomber squadrons.

Accordingly, the attacks occured frequently, particularly on

13 December 1943

21 January 1944

24 July 1944

Extremely hard hit was the town on 16/17 August 1944 with 900 tons of bombs and shortly thereafter on 27 August with 1,900 tons of bombs and then on 15/16 September 1944 with 1,500 tons of bombs.

So within a month over 4,000 tons of bombs were dropped on the city and the harbor.

Even at the final point of the bombing war, in April/May 1945, the U.S. Air Force dropped nearly 2,000 tons of bombs destroying two thirds of the city. Also the war ships anchored in port, the 'Admiral Hipper', the "Admiral Scheer' and the 'Emden' have been badly hit or sunk.

In a total of 90 attacks 2,263 people were killed.
