As an administrative metropolis and significant center for chemical, steel and machinery industry, Düsseldorf was an important strategic target of the Allied bomber fleet, so that the town was attacked several times.

 

The most serious attacks were made on:

The air strike on Whit Monday 1943 (12 June) was particularly violent and burned forty square kilometers of the city.

Balance sheet: 1,212 deaths, 300,000 wounded, 16 churches and 13 hospitals devastated.

 

Alone on 2 November 1944 almost 4,500 tons of bombs were dropped on the city igniting a devastating fire storm in the old town.

In a total of 243 air raids 86,500 dwellings and 51 percent of the city were destroyed.

The 18,000 tons of bombs droppen on Düsseldorf killed 5,863 civilians.
